SAN JUAN BONFIRES
The 23rd of June is the Cremá de les fogueres de Sant Joan (Bonfires of Sant Joan) !!!!
In ancient times, this tradition dates back to the time when the farmers of Alicante celebrated the longest day of the year for harvesting the crops and the shortest night for the destruction of evils.
Nowadays, the bonfires of San Juan are celebrated from the 20th of June to the 24th of June, being the 24th of June an official holiday in many towns of Alicante. It is also of International Tourist Interest.
On the night of the 23rd to the 24th of June, families and friends gather all along the beaches of Alicante for dinner, mascletá, fireworks and the famous bonfires.
At 00.00h on the 24th of June many people dip their feet in the sea to purify the body and spirit, make a wish to ward off the bad and attract the good.
